Guidance Notes

As an integral part of your sponsorship your college tuition fees are paid on your behalf.

However where external funding might be available to mitigate such costs, it is a requirement of your sponsorship that a claim is made for any additional support that might be available.

The programmes that attract funding under the SAAS (Student Awards Agency Scotland) funding scheme are as follows:

  • Scottish Professional Diploma programmes – Phases 1 and 3, both Deck and Engineering programmes.
  • HNC (Higher National Certificate) programmes – Phase 1,both Deck and Engineering programmes.

We now need you to make an application as per the following guidance:

Deck Candidates:

  • HND Nautical Science (With Prof Dip), or
  • HNC Nautical Science.

Engineer Candidates:

  • HND Marine Engineering (With Prof Dip), or
  • HNC Marine Engineering

  • Please complete the application as carefully as possible.
  • You should expect to receive notification of the outcome of your claim within 28 days. Please forward a copy to me as soon as possible.

This application we are asking you to make is for a ‘bursary’ which reduces the tuition fees your sponsoring company will be required to pay. It is not a loan that you will need to pay back in the future.

If you do not qualify, because you do not meet the residency rules or have undertaken qualifying training before, this will not affect your sponsorship with the SSTG, but we do need a copy of the notification received confirming the outcome of your application.

Depending on the course you are following, you may be eligible to apply for additional funding to support your living costs whilst at college. However, you should note that in most cases this will be in the form of a loan that will need to be paid back in the future. It is not compulsory that you take a maintenance loan out in order to qualify for the bursary to cover the college tuition fees.

Please do not hesitate in contacting your Training Officer if you need any clarification on the application process.
