Time Under Training whilst Under 18 Years of Age.

College Attendance:

Universities and Further/Higher Education establishments may have different rules that apply if you are under 18 years of age and these must be adhered to at all times.

College Halls Of Residence:

You will often find that the rules in the Halls of Residence will also be dependent on age with substantially more restrictions applied to those individuals under 18 years of age and these must be adhered to at all times.

Working Practices:

Health and safety rules and regulations often dictate that a greater number of considerations must be taken into account when assessing the risks applying to those cadets under 18 years of age.

This may impact on the activities that you may be able to perform whilst at sea. The rules with respect to ‘hours of work’ may also vary depending on your age and will have a major effect on what tasks you may be able to undertake at night.

However some dispensations are provided for individuals undertaking training and not employed. You will often find that the precise position is far from clear and may also vary depending on the flag of the vessel.

You must also take some responsibility for you own safety whilst on board and not knowingly undertake any activity that you believe to be unsafe.

Legal Aspects:

In the UK it is an offence to purchase, or attempt to purchase alcohol or cigarettes, whilst under the age of 18. SSTG will take very seriously any reports of such breeches of behaviour and take appropriate action accordingly.

SSTG reserves the right to discuss any concerns we may have with regard to your training with respect to any candidate less than 18 years of age with their parent or guardian and the individual nominated as your ‘Next of Kin’.
