US Visa Application Guidance Notes

Please be sure to read the on-line instructions carefully before beginning the application process:

  • Log on to US embassy website:   uk.usembassy.gov
  • Select: ‘Visas’ on the top line drop down menu.

  • Select: ‘Non-immigrant Visa Categories’ on the menu to the left hand side of the page.

  • Select: ‘C-1/D Visa’ in the description table: crewmembers working on air or sea carriers.

  • Select: the following link on the page below the table: ‘If you believe that a C-1/D visa is appropriate in your case, click here and follow steps 2-7’.
  • Select step 3: Complete the DS-160 on-line – please ensure that when selecting embassy location you choose England, London from the drop down menu.

  • Please select Category ‘D’ – Crewmember under ‘Other’, when it asks for type of visa required.

  • Where DS-160 requests information and dates on educational establishments attended you must list any schools/colleges attended from the age of 11 upwards.

  • Where DS-160 asks for date of arrival in the US if it will not allow you to leave blank or enter N/A enter an approximate date of arrival (eg 1 calendar month after completion of your current phase).

  • Where it asks for the address that you will stay in the US and does not allow you to leave blank, try and select the option that will allow you to move on without the need to put in any information.  If this isn’t possible then enter Texas in the state box (if it does not allow you to leave it blank or type N/A), and enter the SSTG address (even though it is not a US address).

  • If it does not allow you to leave fields blank that are asking for contact telephone numbers in the states, then complete the field with a series of 000’s, but leave blank wherever possible.

  • Once completed you should print a copy which will need to betaken with you on the day of your appointment.

  • Before you can book an appointment at the embassy, you will need your DS-160 confirmation barcode page along with your application ID reference which will be generated on successful completion of the form.

  • SSTG will provide you with an “employer letter” which you will need to take to your appointment along with your Visa Interview Confirmation Receipt and your passport.

  • Please be aware that you should have no cuts or blisters on your fingers on the day of your appointment as you will need to have prints taken.
