SSTG Phase 3 (Interim College Phase) Instructions.

By the end of this phase of your training you should have completed most of your professional studies. You are also likely to have completed a number of the short course certificates required for the issue of an OOW CoC. 

Entry Requirements: 

Entry requirements which must be met prior to commencing this phase: 

  • Hold a valid ENG 1 Medical (Note: This will be required to be valid on the date of entry to the GMDSS (GOC) examination). 
  • Hold a steering certificate (Deck Officer Trainees only. 
  • All other general requirements of the earlier phases of the programme being followed. 
  • TRB (Training Record Book): It is expected that you will have gained a reasonable amount of sea service and completed a satisfactory proportion of your TRB. This must also be accompanied by a workbook with sufficient content to backup the TRB tasks already completed and a broad range of other entries in support of the time spent at sea. 

Training To Be Completed During This Phase: 

This phase of your training will largely consist of the following: 

  • Consolidation of any work based learning completed during the preceding sea phase. 
  • Complete the majority of your academic studies (in some cases you will qualify for your academic qualification in full, whereas in other cases you may have some studies and assessments to undertaken in your final college phase. 

Personal Study Required: 

In addition to attending all scheduled lecturers, timetabled self-study periods, tutorials and short courses the SSTG expect you to complete a certain amount of private study as per the following guidelines: 

  • BSc/BEng – 25 hours per week.
  • FD/SPD – 25 hours per week.
  • HND – 10 hours per week.
  • HNC – 10 hours per week. 

Items To Be Taken To College With You: 

The following original items must be taken to college with you: 

  • Discharge Book.
  • Passport.
  • Valid ENG 1 Medical Certificate.
  • All original ‘short course’ certificates.
  • MNTB TRB.
  • Navigational and Operations Workbook (Deck only).
  • Engineering and Operations Workbook (Engineer only).
  • Workbook (ETO only).
  • 4 passport photographs.
  • Sufficient cash to cover anticipated immediate requirements and emergencies.
  • Clothing and personal effects necessary to complete this phase of your training. A full Trainee kit list can be found here.
