Merchant Navy Training offers Adventure and Opportunity

Training to become a Ship’s Officer with the SSTG provides an unbeatable opportunity to combine training for an exciting career with international travel.

Working at sea may not appeal to everyone, but for those who are seeking adventure and a career that is out of the ordinary we provide some great opportunities.

Whether you want to train as Deck, Engineer or Electro Technical Officer, your training will last approximately three years. You will spend time at college completing academic studies in your chosen field interspersed with time at sea gaining invaluable work experience on ships operated by your sponsoring company.

At sea you will be undertaking a wide range of duties and will be performing a wide range of tasks with different crew members. This will quickly widen your experience and will provide you with continually increasing knowledge. Much of your time will be spent under-studying an experienced officer and undertaking watch keeping duties. These will vary depending on whether you are training to be a Deck (or navigating) Officer, an Engineering Officer or an Electro Technical Officer.

The two entry levels allowing you to commence training are where you have successfully completed either GCSEs / National 5s, or A Levels / Highers. Depending on the entry level you will complete academic studies during your time at college and will either achieve an HNC or Foundation Degree in Marine Operations, Marine Engineering or Electronics.

The sponsorship provided will cover all of your college tuition fees and the costs of your additional professional training that is required to serve at sea and to qualify as a ship’s officer. The cost of travel to join and leave each of the ships you serve on throughout your training will be covered, along with your accommodation on board. A personal allowance will also be paid whilst under training, providing the opportunity to complete the training, effectively completely debt free.

SSTG seek applications from candidates with a passion for a lifestyle with a difference throughout the year, although the programmes commence in January and September.

So don’t delay and apply today
