Working at sea as a Deck, Engineer or Electro-Technical Officer provides a wide variety of experiences and for many provides a life-time of employment.
However there are considerable opportunities for career progression not just at sea in the Merchant Navy but ashore and in other industries.
One way of gaining experience and to seek promotion is to work on a variety of different ship types. These provide a variety of opportunities whether you are serving on the largest vessels travelling across the oceans of the world, or perhaps staying closer to home working in the North Sea or trading within European waters.
As a seafarer with a breadth of experience there will be opportunities for taking up a role ashore. These can range from working in ship operation management, training seafarers to working with the regulatory authorities. Looking further afield you will find opportunities too in a range of other industries including marine insurance, ship broking and the legal profession.
