Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

We have prepared a selection of answers to topics we are regularly asked about to help explain a little more about recruitment procedures, training and careers in the Merchant Navy.

Should you have any questions of your own that you have not found an answer to on our website please speak to one of our Recruitment Officers on 01634 820 820.

Alternatively submit your question directly to us by using the form below. An SSTG Recruitment Officer will get back to you as soon as they can.

How do I apply?

The SSTG try to make the application process as simple as possible and we provide an online application form which, if fully completed, will provide all the information we required to make a decision on whether you will be invited to attend an interview.

If you would prefer you can print a hand copy of our application form or you can request a printed application form and brochure to be sent to you so that you may complete the form and return it to us by post.

What are the academic entry requirements?

For the Foundation Degree programme the minimum entry requirements vary depending on the University awarding the degree but are likely to be 120 UCAS points, to include Maths, or equivalent numerate subject, as a minimum.

For the HND programme the minimum entry requirements are 4, GCSEs (Grade A/C) or SCE Standard Grades (Levels 1/3) or equivalent qualifications, in English Language, Mathematics, Physics (or Combined Science), and at least one other subject.

The above should be considered as the absolute minimum and at times of high applicants' candidates not offering above the minimum may not necessarily be offered an interview.

What are the medical requirements?

Every seafarer needs a valid medical certificate to serve at sea, which needs to be re-evaluated every 2 years, sometimes less.

Do I need to have a medical before I apply?

No, but you will need one before you commence training and any offer made will be issued strictly subject to passing a medical before you commence training. Check the requirements and if you are in any doubt contact our recruitment team for further information.

How long will it take to find out if my application has been successful?

If you complete the online application, and provide all the information we require, you are likely to receive an initial response by email within 3 working days. Please provide as much information as possible in support of your application. We can't take information into account if you do not tell us!

When do the courses start?

Most courses start at the beginning of the academic year between August and October, with limited options to commence training on other dates throughout the year.

How long will the training be?

The training can vary slightly in length depending on a variety of factors but is likely to last around three years.

Where will I study?

See the college links supplied on our useful links page. Not all colleges offer every programme option, and we will provide you with more information on the options available at your interview. It is important that you do you research before your interview so you have some idea of your preferences.

Will I receive a training allowance whilst under training?

Yes. The amount will vary between companies and will be dependent on the other terms and conditions. When comparing the rates paid by different training providers you should remember that the SSTG organise and pay for accommodation whilst you are attending college or university, whilst many do not. A benefit that could be worth in excess of an additional £4,000 to you.

How long will I be at sea for?

You could be appointed to ships where you will be expected to spend anything from one week to four months onboard the same vessel. It very much depends on what type of vessel it is and where it is trading.

What qualifications will I have when I finish my course?

The most important qualification you will achieve is known as a Certificate of Competency and in the UK this is issued to you by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Training programmes also include an academic qualification the level of which will vary depending on the programme enrolled on.

What are the wages likely to be when I am qualified?

The precise wages available vary widely depending on the type and size of vessel worked on, the leave taken and other terms and conditions, together with a wide range of other considerations which must be taken into account. However as a newly qualified candidate with an Officer of the Watch qualification the starting rate is likely to be in the range of £20,000 to £25,000 per annum.

What is the earning potential if I reach the position of Master or Chief Engineer?

Excellent, but whether you achieve the highest salaries available is up to you. The Master or Chief Engineer of the most complex vessels can earn in excess of £75,000 per annum and shore opportunities exist with a wide range of salary levels. However, the opportunities to earn the highest salary levels are limited in number and are only achieved by the very best candidates. The opportunities to earn mid-level salaries are significant and well within the reach of most applicants.

What are my career prospects?

There is currently a world-wide shortage of qualified seafarers and with an aging workforce the prospects have never looked so good. But with the average time spend serving at sea around 10-15 years, you should also consider the variety of positions available ashore. With London being a critical hub for maritime trade, insurance, ship broking, finance and legal arbitration the opportunities are almost endless for individuals with sea going experience.

Do I get paid whilst training?

Yes. Not only do you receive a salary or allowance but, in addition, all college costs including tuition and examination fees and accommodation charges, and shipboard living and meal costs, are paid.
